The Atlanta Braves have re-acquired power-hitting outfielder Jorge Soler, who won the 2021 World Series MVP in Atlanta, plus reliever Luke Jackson, from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Tyler Matzek and Sabin Ceballos, the team announced Monday evening.
Soler’s got off to a slow start in the Bay Area, but has found his groove over the last two months. Overall, he’s posted a 116 OPS+ in 93 games entering Monday. He’s totaled 23 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 40 RBIs, though his isolated power and hard-hit rate are significantly below his career marks.
Perhaps he will discover yet another power surge in Atlanta, where he clobbered 14 homers in 55 games in 2021. In 11 postseason games with the Braves, he posted a .242/.342/.606 slash line (.948 OPS), clubbing three doubles, three homers and six RBIs in 38 plate appearances.
Two of the Braves’ best outfielders–Ronald Acuna Jr., one of the best players in baseball, and Michael Harris II–are shelved with injuries. Ozzie Albies recently hit the injured list with a fractured wrist, too, compounding troubles for one of the most talented squads in the National League.
Should the Giants continue to sell, I’m interested with what their asking prices would be for, say, Blake Snell or Matt Chapman. According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, they’re not planning to be in “full sell mode,” though that doesn’t mean they couldn’t sell off a few of their lesser pieces that aren’t the aforementioned Snell or Chapman.
