Derrius Guice Released by Washington

Derrius Guice was released by the Washington Football Team on Friday afternoon, per Ian Rapoport. Earlier in the day Guice was arrested for multiple domestic violence charges.

The Washington Football Team also released a statement on Twitter regarding Derrius Guice’s release. The statement said the following:

On Thursday we learned of a potential domestic violence related incident involving RB Derrius Guice. We immediately alerted the National Football League and have continued to work with them during this process. We then met with Derrius to inform him that he was excused from all team activity pending a review of this matter. This afternoon we learned that there were multiple charged filed against Derrius. Upon review of the nature of these charges and following internal discussions, we have decided to release Derrius immediately.

Derrius Guice was a 2nd round pick for the Washington Football Team in the 2018 NFL Draft. He tore his ACL in the preseason which ended his rookie year before it even began. Guice then got injured again in week 1 of the 2019 season. He tore his meniscus and need surgery. He only played in 5 total games in 2019, he had 42 carries for 245 yards and 2 touchdowns. In terms of receiving, not much better. Guice had 7 catches for 79 yards and 1 touchdown.

Derrius Guice had major character concerns upon entering the NFL. He fell out of the first round because of them. These character concerns along with a horrendous injury history make it very unlikely he will play in the NFL again. A team has no issue taking a shot on a guy with character concerns if he can play. At the same time, if a guy has great character teams will take a chance on him too. Lacking in both character and ability to play is a quick recipe to flaming out in the NFL and not playing ever again.
