Sam Hauser, Celtics agree to four-year extension

The Boston Celtics have signed sharpshooter Sam Hauser to a four-year, $45 million extension, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Sunday.

Over his three-year career, the former undrafted free agent’s been one of the most proficient 3-point shooters in the entire league. Hauser, 26, has finished in the top-15 in qualified 3-point percentage each of the last two seasons. Last year, he averaged 9.0 points on 42.4 percent from beyond the arc, in addition to 3.5 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game.

Among players who have made at least 350 combined 3-pointers since the start of 2021-22, Hauser is third in 3-point percentage–trailing only Luke Kennard (46.2) and Grayson Allen (42.5), who have made 430 and 510 triples, respectively.

The 6-foot-8 wing is flanked by very good defenders all around the hardwood, with a combination of Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jayson Tatum Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis. Thus, Hauser’s been picked on a lot, though he’s held up quite well in space defensively, limiting opponents to 0.91 points per possession (58th percentile), per Synergy’s tracking data.

By re-signing Hauser, the Celtics will have all of their top-10 from last year’s championship team under contract in 2024-25 and eight in 2025-26. In a day and age where rosters are ever-fluctuating, the Celtics are taking “running it back” to a new stratosphere.

When you win 80 combined games and cruise your way to an NBA Title, it’s hard to fault that process.
