Spain’s Luis de la Fuente Inquired About U.S. Soccer Vacancy

Yes, you read that correctly. Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente inquired about the USMNT’s currently vacant head coaching position just a few days before he won the UEFA 2024 European Championship.

The news broke when Massoud Roushandel, the president of Global Elite Sports Group, told the Washington Post that he emailed U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker about de la Fuente’s interest in the job.

This email came on Friday, just two days after the long overdue firing of Gregg Berhalter from the USMNT head coaching position.

Now the U.S. Soccer Federation has been looking for a high-profile candidate to hopefully lead the USMNT to a successful showing at the much anticipated 2026 World Cup held on American soil. Luis de la Fuente certainly fits the bill.

However, there is reason to believe USMNT fans shouldn’t be celebrating just yet. De la Fuente used some of his post Euro winning press conference to criticize the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RSFF) in regards to financial support.

“No one has given us anything,” he said after the game. “When things cost so much, they are given even more value.”

His wages are also reportedly quite low so it seems likely that he may be using the USMNT job as leverage to better his position with the RSFF in potential contract renegotiations. Now whether that’s actually the case or he is genuinely remains to be seen.

However, what is certain is that if the USMNT have remotely any chance to land Luis de la Fuente, they must do everything in their power. This is a proven winner on the international level, not to mention the fact that he took a Spain squad that was at quite a low with minimal hype and has made them into a reincarnation of early 2010s Spain with less talent at his disposal. The team is in a relative golden generation talent-wise and it cannot continue to be wasted. If there’s a chance to get him, it must be done. Whatever it takes.
