Anonymous NBA Head Coach says Cooper Flagg was best player on Team USA Select Team

Despite being the only non-professional basketball player there, Duke commit Cooper Flagg stole the show between Team USA and the Team USA Select Team, which is helping prepare for the 2024 Olympics in over two weeks.

Don’t worry. Flagg, 17, will be an NBA player very soon. He’s projected to go No. 1 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft next summer as one of the top prospects of this generation.

One anonymous NBA head coach said that Flagg was the best player on the Select Team over the two scrimmages played this weekend, according to NBA insider and reporter Marc Spears.

The Team USA Select Team, head coached by Orlando’s Jamahl Mosley, featured 12 current NBA or NBA G-League players, in addition to a pair of others previous NBA, NBA G-League or USA Basketball experience. That list included Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Charlotte’s Brandon Miller–both of whom finished top-4 in 2023-24 Rookie of the Year voting–plus Orlando’s Jalen Suggs, Sacramento’s Keegan Murray, Houston’s Jabari Smith Jr., and Detroit’s Jalen Duren, among others.

Here are some of the viral clips of Flagg’s highlights:

The scrimmages weren’t televised nor were there box scores available for everyone’s individual numbers, so its difficult to compare and contrast. What we do know is that Team USA fought off a comeback attempt against the Select Team during Monday’s scrimmage, winning 74-73. You can watch the final period of that here:

Cooper Flagg is a problem … and he’s going to be one for the foreseeable future. The amount of poise and confidence he possessed against players like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Devin Booker and Anthony Edwards, among others, is unheralded.

He made the most of his opportunity. This won’t be his last time in a Team USA jersey, either. He’s only just arriving.
