Monte Morris signs one-year deal with Suns

Free agent point guard Monte Morris has signed a one-year minimum with the Phoenix Suns, NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic was first to report Tuesday.

Morris, spent last season with the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, appearing in 33 combined games after missing the first part of the year with a quad injury. His impact with Minnesota was pretty negligible after getting dealt there ahead of the deadline, averaging 5.1 points and 2.3 assists in 15.1 minutes.

He now will be one of the top table setters for a Suns squad lacking point guard depth. It’s a low-risk, medium-reward move, given the cost.

Bradley Beal and Devin Booker were the two de-facto point guards last season. While neither was terrible at initiating offense and creating for others, it’s not their forte; they needed a player to ease the burden. By being in the second apron, Phoenix’s market to acquire said point guard was limited–now enters Morris.

Over his seven-year career, he’s averaged 10.0 points and 3.8 assists to just 0.8 turnovers. He’s a low-usage secondary ball-handler who doesn’t make many mistakes with the ball in his hand, ranking in the 95th percentile or better in turnover rate in every year of his career, according to Cleaning The Glass.

The only other moves Phoenix have done this season–outside of the draft–are re-signing Royce O’Neale plus Bol Bol while signing Mason Plumlee. They’ve been as active as you’d expect a second-apron team to be with three open roster spots. Who do you think they should target? Let us know in the comments!
