Sam Hauser has been an incredible find by the Celtics after the former Marquette and Virginia product went undrafted in 2021. Hauser has since become a key bench scorer who can hit shots at an efficient rate from three. That’s while having plus size at 6-foot-7. The question now is how does Boston proceed from here?
Hauser, 26, is under contract next year for $2.1 million. That is if the Celtics decide to pick up the team option. On the surface, that seems like a no-brainer. Except that team option is leverage the team needs to actually get a reasonable extension done.
Boston has two pathways here. They pick up the cheap option and worry about the extension the following year. The Celtics could ink Hauser to a four-year deal for around $78 million, similar to what Grayson Allen signed for.
OR…
The C’s could decline the team option. That would make Hauser a restricted free agent. Is there a scenario where Hauser would receive a raise this year in exchange for signing a lower cap hit for future seasons? Could Boston get a deal done for around $7-8 million per year?
It’s really as easy as that. Two avenues to go down. I’m not sure either is the wrong call. An argument can be made for both sides. It’s a matter of what Hauser is willing to sign for if the team option is declined. We’re about to find out how this all goes down.
In case you missed it, Oshae Brissett is likely gone after he declined his player option.
