Terrence Shannon Jr. 2024 NBA Draft Profile

After a five year collegiate career, Terrence Shannon Jr. is finally taking his talents to the NBA level. We’re talking about everything you need to know about the former Illinois guard. Here is your 2024 NBA Draft Profile on Shannon.

Height: 6’5.75″ (6’8.75″ wingspan, 8’4″ standing reach)

Weight: 219.4

Age: 24 at the end of July

Position: SG/SF

Shannon, a former four star prospect, played high school at powerhouse IMG Academy. The Chicago native played three years at Texas Tech before finishing up his career playing two years for the Fighting Illini.

This past season, Shannon averaged 23 points, four rebounds, 2.3 assists, and one steal per game. That’s while cashing in on a conversation rate of 47.5% from the field, 36.2% from 3, and 80.1% at the free throw line.

Strengths:

Shannon is at his best when he’s slashing his way to the bucket which leads to a score. He’s more so a scorer in general. Shannon is the perfect spark of offense any team needs. He can hit shots and put up points in the transition game.

You can tell his speed is a factor. The guy gets downhill and attacks the basket. He’s fast and can blow by defenders to the rim.

The shot making has also gotten better in recent years too. He’s reliable in the catch and shoot game. Shannon can also pull up and convert his fair share of middys. You can tell the pressure he puts on defenses. Shannon averaged 8.8 free-throw attempts per game, which isn’t a small number.

Weaknesses:

While he might have natural athletic traits to his game, Shannon hasn’t exactly been a superstar in the playmaking department. The assist totals bare that out. The eye test also bares that out. There are shades of Kelly Oubre in his game. Can certainly score but are others involved? Is he deep in his bag of tricks or is he winning with burst and athleticism?

The rebounding grittiness hasn’t been there. Let’s just say Shannon isn’t an all world defender either. Based on his usage rate, the assist to turnover stuff is actually probably alarming. How many elements of his game is he missing excluding the scoring department? I think that’s the worry.

Also, Shannon is at an advanced age. If he didn’t dominate in college at that age, then he shouldn’t be in the league at all. To cap things off, Shannon is also in the middle of a serious off-the-court trial that could hamper his future. I’ll leave it at that for now.

Projection: Late First/ Early Second

Shannon brings something to the table. It’s a matter of how high you’re willing to pick him and how concerned are you about the off-court baggage. Either way, at some point he’s too talented to pass on. Expect Shannon to hear his name called somewhere at the back of the first round or maybe in the early stages of the second round.
