Detroit Tigers Send Spencer Torkelson to AAA

The first pick of the 2020 MLB draft, Spencer Torkelson, was sent to the minors over the weekend after a tough start to the 2024 season.

Spencer Torkelson has been having a tough go of things this season. It’s clear from the statistics that the first pick of the 2020 MLB Draft is on a downward trend compared to last season. His offense has suffered the worst. He is averaging .201 with 42 hits and a paltry 18 RBI in 54 games. His OBP is an eye-watering .266. He has only 4HR, compared to 31 from last season. His BA, OBP, and OPS have all decreased by significant margins (.233/.313/.758 to .201/.266/.597, respectively). Furthermore, he has only drawn 16 walks compared to 56 strikeouts, an unacceptable ratio considering his current lack of power at the plate. His WAR currently sits at -1.1.

This is a far cry from Spencer Torkelson’s college stats that earned him his draft position. His 2019 season with Arizona State was phenomenal. He slashed .351 with 23HR and 66 RBI in 57 games for the Sun Devils. Though his 2020 season was cut short due to the draft, he seemed on his way to repeat his performance. He exited his college career hitting .340 with 6HR in 17 games.

Unfortunately for the Detroit Tigers, Spencer Torkelson’s underperformance is just one component of a frustrating season. They’re ten games out of first place, and sit at one game under .500 as of today. Hopefully for Detroit, Torkelson’s replacement will breathe some life into the team. Justyn-Henry Malloy has been crushing it in the minors this year. He’s batting .253 with 27 RBI for the Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate. He is set to make his MLB debut for the team this week.
