Copa America 2024 Team Previews: Peru

The 2024 Copa America begins on June 20th in the United States, with six CONCACAF teams set to compete in the tournament. Over the next couple of weeks, we will preview every team playing in the competition. Up next are two-time winners: Peru!

Ranked 32nd in the FIFA rankings, Peru will look to try to win their third-ever Copa America. In four of the last five, the Peruvian National Team has finished as the runners-up or in fourth place. The Peru team is knocking at the doorstep to win the competition once again, they just need the result.

Copa America Appearances

The 2024 Copa America will be Peru’s 33rd appearance in the tournament. Since the name was changed to Copa America in 1975, Peru has played in every Copa America since with their result in the 2021 edition being a fourth-place finish.

Best Finish in Copa America

The Peru National team has won the competition twice in their history. Once in 1939 when it was known as the South America Championship, with their second Copa America win in the first iteration of the newly named Copa America in 1975.

Key Players

While not the deepest roster in the competition, there are a few names on the squad that opposing teams have to worry about.

Current Serie A striker Gianluca Lapadula will be the nation’s main number nine heading into the Copa. Lapadula this past season had 4 G/A, but once had 11 G/A when he was with AC Milan back in 2016-2017.

Holding down the midfield for the country is Renato Tapia of La Liga’s Celta de Vigo. In Tapia’s time in Europe, he has won five titles with Feyenoord. In a group with many notable attackers, Peru will need someone to slow them down.

Manager

Taking the Peruvian National Team to the 2024 Copa America is the Uruguayan manager Jorge Fossati. With experience managing teams in South American leagues and in the Middle East, Fossati hopes to win the Copa America with the Nation.

Biggest Game — All of Them

In one of the harder groups in the 2024 Copa America, Peru won’t have any easy games to play. In the first two matches of the group stage, Peru will face Chile and Canada. Why these are challenging matchups for Peru, they won’t walk away with a win in either; the best they do is get a draw in both matches. To close out the group stage, they will face Argentina in a loss. Sorry, but there is no way they beat the 2022 World Cup winners.

Prediction

As the weakest team in a strong group, I see the Peruvian National Team getting knocked out of the tournament in a group stage exit. The 1975 Copa America winners will go winless, with their only point coming in a draw against Canada.
