Chicago Bulls star Lonzo Ball hopes to be in the lineup as early as opening day.

It has been quite a long time since we’ve seen Lonzo Ball suit up and take the court in an NBA game. I’m sure it feels like an eternity to him. The Chicago Bulls point guard suffered a season ending torn meniscus playing against the Golden State Warriors on January 14, 2022. He hasn’t played since. However, he expects that to change next season.

Appearing on the What An Experience podcast, Lonzo Ball sounded hopeful about the 2024-2025 NBA season. Despite several knee surgeries and two years away from professional basketball, he “firmly” believes that he will play on opening day. He broke down his most recent knee surgery to gruesome levels. The deterioration of cartilage in his knee left his bones grinding on each other, which caused intense pain. As a result, he needed donor cartilage to replace what he had lost. Despite this, his demeanor was playful and happy. Ball told his friends that his recovery was going well, and even laughed about being able to dunk in practice. You can tell he is relieved and optimistic.

It’s hard not to be sympathetic to the oldest Ball brother. It’s been a very long road to recovery for Lonzo. His knee has plagued him since his Laker days, where he first tore his meniscus. He worked through the injury until it became too much bare on the Bulls. He’s had handfuls of procedures to attempt to repair his knee. He describes the first twelve months after his season ender on the Bulls as a “wasted year.” He sounded frustrated with his doctors, saying they spent that time just “trying to figure out what the problem was.” We’ve seen many stars continue stellar careers after completing the comeback from brutal injuries. Let’s hope Lonzo Ball can do the same.
