Pistons Plan To Hire Trajan Langdon As President Of Basketball Operations

The Detroit Pistons are set to hire New Orleans Pelicans general manager Trajan Langdon as the team’s president of basketball operations, according to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Langdon has 12 years of experience in NBA front offices. The highlight of that time was in New Orleans where he has served as the Pelicans general manager. Langdon became the general manager in 2019 and immediately began to rebuild the franchise. This task started with the Anthony Davis trade and the selection of Zion Williamson. In the remainder of the tenure, Landgon made several solid moves to help build the Pelicans.

Langdon also served as the assistant general manager for the Brooklyn Nets, the director of player administration with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and as a pro scout with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Pistons offseason is kicking off with a change in leadership. That should be a surprise considering they finished the 2023-24 NBA season with a 14-68 season. That performance resulted in the NBA’s worst record as well as the worst record in franchise history.

The first assignment for Langdon will be to determine the fate of general manager Troy Weaver and head coach Monty Williams. Detroit Pistons beat reporter for The Athletic James Edwards III reported Langdon will have “final call on all basketball decisions”. That includes the potential firing of Weaver and Williams.

In theory, it would be appealing for Langdon to clean out the front office. The Pistons’ lack of success warrants that type of drastic change, but it also allows Langdon to hire his own staff.

Langdon will have the potential to make massive moves with the Pistons. Obviously, that begins with potentially reshaping the front office. In extension to that, Detroit has $64 million in projected cap space, per Spotrac, and they hold the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
