Colin Cowherd discounts JJ Redick’s coaching candidacy due to wearing a backwards hat

Remember Colin Cowherd’s ridiculous rhetoric surrounding quarterbacks and backwards hats, where he blasted Baker Mayfield, Carson Wentz and, most recently, Brock Purdy for it?

Well, he found a new target this week. No, not another quarterback–or a football player, for that matter–but former 15-year veteran and NBA analyst JJ Redick, who’s a possible candidate for the current Los Angeles Lakers head coaching vacancy.

“I didn’t hear a word LeBron said. I couldn’t stop staring at the hat,” Cowherd said. “JJ Redick is going for NBA coaching jobs. He looks like a guy that’s going to move my couch. Didn’t like it.

“I’d tell JJ to his face, ‘Dude, you’re going to be an executive in this league; you’re going to be a high-level executive or coach.’ You guys can go ahead and push back on that stuff. I didn’t like it … JJ doesn’t care what I say. I’m just telling you, if I’m his agent, I’m like, ‘You could be Steve Kerr.'”

Cowherd’s response was to a video of Redick and LeBron James–who co-host a podcast called “Mind The Game”–where Redick, in a casual setting, was wearing a backwards hat.

Both Redick and James responded to Cowherd’s rant on Twitter, poking fun at him:

Cowherd went on to call their podcast “pretty damn sharp,” but went on to sarcastically remark that Redick wearing a backwards hat on his own podcast was “no big deal.”

Why is it a big deal, honestly? Who cares what Redick wants to wear on his own show in a casual setting? Maybe I am saying this as an individual who wears backwards hats all the time. Maybe Cowherd would never take me seriously or say “I’m not it” because of how my hat is positioned. Why should that matter? Do you think Redick will wear a backwards hat during the coaching interview, on the sidelines or in a professional setting on TV? No? Then why is it a big deal otherwise?

It’s a silly rhetoric, and he may be fishing for views (again). Maybe he’s just trolling. If so: Congratulations, you got me! But if you’re seriously discounting candidates because of how they wear a freaking hat on their own show versus their character or resume, then be my guest!
