Steelers’ Payton Wilson: “I Like To Take People’s Heads Off”

The Pittsburgh Steelers absolutely crushed the 2024 NFL Draft, landing multiple players who can be key contributors in their first year. However, many are touting NC State LB Payton Wilson as one of the biggest steals of the draft, as he had first-round talent but fell to the third due to his injury history (Trey said so himself in his draft profile). While appearing on Cameron Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast, he proved that he is going to fit right in with this team.

“I like to take people’s heads off and I like to fly around with the best of them. . . . “If there’s 75 plays, I’m just the kind of person that wants to make 75 tackles, whatever it is,” Wilson said, via Steelers Depot. “That’s just how I’ve played. Grew up in a very blue-collared area, grew up wrestling. So, that mentality’s kind of been instilled in me my whole life. Like, I don’t know, when I’m out there and someone’s got the ball in their hands, I want to hit them so bad. I want to be the first person there every single time.”

Payton Wilson was a mega-producer in college, totaling 402 tackles while playing at NC State, even with his injury history. He and newly acquired Patrick Queen are going to make a formidable Linebacker group, pending Wilson can stay on the field. He brings speed to that unit, which is something that has been sorely lacking for years now. Omar Khan has been building this roster the right way over the last two drafts, and if they can ever figure out the Quarterback position, this team could be poised for a playoff run.
