Eury Perez to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery

Miami Marlins right-hander Eury Perez will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, the team announced Thursday, according to multiple reports.

The 20-year-old starter made his MLB debut last season, where he tossed only 91.1 innings. He pitched to a 3.15 ERA–albeit a 4.11 FIP and a 4.21 xFIP–including a 28.9 strikeout rate and an 8.3 percent walk rate. Among starters who pitched at least 90 innings in 2023, his strikeout rate and ERA were both the 12th-best in baseball while his ERA- (72) was tied for the ninth-best–along with Wade Miley and Shohei Ohtani — per FanGraphs .

Perez only pitched 191.2 innings (46 starts) through three levels of the minors, including 36.2 innings in Double-A Pensacola last season before being called up; he’s never pitched in more than 77 innings before tossing 128 combined frames last season.

Perez’s injury is now the fourth big injury to the Marlins’ rotation; Sandy Alcantara underwent Tommy John surgery last October while Edward Cabrera and Braxton Garrett both have shoulder injuries . The Marlins just got Max Meyer , its top pitching prospect, back from injury after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022 that forced him to miss the entirety of 2023.

Are the Diamondbacks on the verge of a spending spree?

Miami’s current rotation still doesn’t offer much optimism behind Jesus Luzardo and A.J. Puk , who’s surrendered six runs across six innings with a 25.7 percent walk rate through two starts against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Angels. It doesn’t help that the Marlins, winless through seven games, are off to the worst start in franchise history with the least productive offense in baseball (53 wRC+; 30th).

One could understand if they operate on the side of precaution because of his age, so there’s a non-zero chance Perez does not pitch in 2025. How do you think it’s handled? Let us know in the comments!
