N’Keal Harry Collegiate Coach Gives Thoughts On His Career

Former Arizona State Sun Devils football head coach Herm Edwards gives his thoughts on N’Keal Harry and the beginning of his career. Edwards coached Harry during his first year as ASU’s head coach, while it was the wide receivers last season at the university before heading into the NFL Draft.

Quote from Tyler Dunne’s “Go Long”:

“He had too many followers, man. That’s what killed him. That poor kid,” Edwards told Dunne. “He had hanger-on’ers. And it was like, ‘C’mon, N’Keal.’ Because talent-wise? He’s got enough talent. He’s a big, strong physical receiver to catch the ball. And then he went to New England. That was the worst place for him to go because it just didn’t fit. That didn’t fit him.”

Harry’s spent his first three seasons with the New England Patriots, not living up to the hype of being a first round draft pick. In those three seasons, N’Keal Harry had 598 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

“Talent sometimes can be a curse. I’ve always said that. If you don’t use it correctly, it could be a curse to you,” Edwards said. “You’ve got so much talent and you think, ‘I got this.’ You ain’t got it. Because the problem is, you’re going into a league where everybody’s got talent and you’ve got to work at it. You’ve got to have work ethic. You’ve got to focus in on football. Football’s got to be the No. 1 thing. It can’t be what football provides you.”

After his failed time in New England, he was traded to the Chicago Bears and continued his disappointing start to a career. In his time in Chicago, he tallied 116 yards with one receiving touchdown in eight games.

N’Keal Harry is currently on a reserve/future contract with the Minnesota Vikings, after being on and off of the Vikings practice squad last season. Harry failed to catch a single ball during his time in Minnesota.

The Vikings will seem to have a hard start next season, after failing to re-sign Kirk Cousins and signing Sam Darnold, who appears to be QB1 heading into the season.
