Trevor Keegan 2024 NFL Draft Profile

The Michigan Wolverines are sending a handful of offensive linemen to the NFL. That includes guard Trevor Keegan. Let’s dive into Keegan’s game and discuss where he falls in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Keegan was a four-star recruit in the 2019 recruiting cycle. At Michigan, he became a starter in 2021. Keegan then held down the starting left guard role and started 37 games over three seasons. In his three years as a starter, Michigan’s offensive line won the Joe Moore Award twice and Keegan was one of the unit’s best players.

The Michigan product projects as a guard in the NFL. At six-foot-five, 310 pounds he holds good size for the position.

Keegan is the quintessential Michigan offensive lineman. It is evident his strength is his run blocking. Once Keegan gets his hands on a defender, he moves them. That can be seen in a variety of blocks. Keegan has shown the ability to create running lanes while facing a blocker head up, pulling, or running a combo block. Plus, he is lethal in short-yardage situations and helps convert first downs.

The one flaw that hurts Keegan in the run game is that he can miss defenders in the open field. This is most common when he is getting to a defender at the second level. Occasionally, it occurs when he pulls. For the most part, Keegan misses because he gets overaggressive and puts himself out of position. It feels like he is attempting to pancake his defender and he attacks with his forearms or shoulder instead of his hands. To a lesser extent, his speed prevents him from catching up to backside linebackers on outside run plays.

Still, Keegan projects as a strong run blocker and can get to the second level while running a combo block.

In the passing game, Keegan will struggle the most against speed rushers. If a strong interior pass rusher can use speed to prevent Keegan from getting his hands on them, they can get strong angles and get to the quarterback. Conversely, if players attempt to rush through him, he holds his ground well.

Keegan also does a good job of helping the lineman next to him. If he does not have a rusher lined up on his face, he helps his teammate create a strong pocket. Keegan catches defenders being washed in his direction and helps if teammates are beaten. Furthermore, he catches blitzes and stunts.

I doubt Keegan will become a starter in the NFL. The potential speed issues raise questions about his pass blocking and he cannot afford to get overaggressive and whiff on blocks at the next level. Although, I think he can be a strong bench player. Keegan’s ability to create running lanes will always be useful.

The best value for Keegan would come on day three of the 2024 NFL Draft. Ideally, that begins in the late portion of the fourth round. If a team takes Keegan in round five, you can feel comfortable adding a depth piece to the offensive line. If a starter gets injured, you can insert Keegan and expect the run game to continue operating.
