Jets Ink Tyron Smith In Free Agency

The Jets have totally overhauled this offensive line and Aaron Rodgers is probably smiling somewhere ear to ear. New York already took John Simpson and Morgan Moses from the Ravens. Now they’re singing one of the best left tackles in the game. Tyron Smith has signed with the Jets on a one year deal.

The deal is expected to be worth $20 million but it’s laced with a ton of incentives in order to get up to that number. For a player who’s been hurt a lot, it’s probably the correct way to structure this sort of deal. The scary part is Metlife Stadium isn’t exactly a safe haven for players. It seems like more guys get hurt there more than anywhere else because of that turf they have.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:

Smith, 33, spent his entire 13-year career with the Cowboys. The former USC product hit the free-agent market for the first time in his career. Despite being a first round pick way back in 2011 (the same year as JJ Watt and he’s already retired) Smith is still at the top of his game when he’s actually on the field. Take PFF grades with a grain of salt but last year, Smith led all tackles with a pass block grade of 88.6. Not that should be considered surprising. He’s been one of the best since day one.

This is such a huge move for the Jets and it gives them insurance. Maybe they don’t need to take a tackle 10th overall anymore. Maybe they can wait until the second round and go best player available at ten. The Jets deserve credit here because left tackles like this just don’t grow on trees.
