The Orlando Magic have agreed to a four-year extension with head coach Jamahl Mosley, the team announced Tuesday.
Mosley, a former assistant in Denver, Cleveland and Dallas, was hired after the 2020-21 season to replace head coach Steve Clifford. In three seasons, the team’s win total has increased from 22 to 34 to 37 (and counting). He is 93-136 in his head coaching career at the time of this publishing.
The Magic currently own the NBA’s No. 4 adjusted defense and No. 14 adjusted NET Rating in the 2023-24 season, per Dunks and Threes. In each of his first three seasons, the team’s adjusted NET Rating has improved by 10 points per 100 possessions while the team’s defense–once a bottom-five unit–has improved by 2.5 points per 100 possessions (from No. 26 to No. 4).
Integral pieces to their recent success are wings Franz Wagner and No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero, who Mosley, 45, has helped develop into franchise cornerstones. He has also done a respectable job developing former top pick Jalen Suggs, Wendell Carter Jr., Markelle Fultz and Cole Anthony, among others.
Orlando’s roster construction isn’t wholly beneficial offensively due to its lack of shooting, but Mosley has helped do a good job weathering that storm. It is currently 37-28, sandwiched in between the New York Knicks (37-27) and Philadelphia 76ers (36-28) in a tight race in the Eastern Conference.
“Jamahl (Mosley) and his staff have done a tremendous job not only this season, but since we hired him back in 2021,” Jeff Weltman, the team’s president of basketball operations, said Tuesday via release. “His preparation, work ethic, ability to connect with the players, and passion he brings to the job every day brings positive results, both on the court and off. We are very happy to have Jamahl lead the Magic for years to come.”
You could make a case that there haven’t been 10 better coaches than Mosley this season–or the last three seasons. Very well-deserved!
