Dustin Poirier Vows To Never Stop Jumping For The Guillotine

Find someone who loves you as much as Dustin Poirier loves to jump the gilly. The former interim champion is famous for attempting guillotine chokes, but he has yet to land one. Despite that, Poirier vows to never stop jumping for guillotines.

On The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Poirier discussed his fascination with the guillotine choke.

“I don’t know,” Poirier said when asked why he continues to jump guillotines. “I need to stop, but I will never.”

“I hit it a lot (in practice). I put people unconscious. Never in a fight though. Maybe I’ll submit Islam (Makhachev) with it.”

“Don’t be silly, jump the gilly, that’s the motto.”

Poirier has never been shy about jumping for the guillotine. At UFC 299, his efforts hit a new level, however. In two rounds against Benoit Saint-Denis, he jumped the guillotine multiple times. According to UFC Stats, Poirier attempted four submissions.

The issue for Poirier is that when he unsuccessfully jumps for the guillotine, which has been every time, he ends up on his back. That put him in a lot of problematic positions against Saint-Denis.

In fairness to Poirier, his guillotine choke has nearly changed his life. At UFC 242, he nearly landed the move against Khabib Nurmagomedov. That experience likely makes it difficult to stop attempting the submission.

Poirier seemingly knows that consistently hunting the guillotine is not the smartest proposition. In his UFC 299 post-fight interview, he revealed that his coaches and teammates repeatedly told him not to jump guillotine. Obviously, Poirier did not listen.

In the future, it would benefit Poirier to develop some counters off his guillotine. If he is unwilling to quit his habit, he could at least find a way to avoid putting himself in an awful position if he does not land the choke.
