Jaguars to place franchise tag on Josh Allen

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to place the franchise tag on EDGE rusher Josh Allen ahead of the deadline, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport first reported Tuesday. According to Rapoport, he will be tagged as a linebacker, which is worth nearly $24 million for the 2024 season.

Allen, 26, made his second career Pro Bowl last year after tallying a career-high 17.5 sacks (a franchise record) in 17 games. He also added 66 combined tackles–43 solo–five away from his career most, plus 17 tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles, one interception and 33 quarterback hits.

His 17.5 sacks tied with Bengals defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson for the second-most leaguewide, trailing only Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt, who had 19.0 sacks.

As Rapoport notes, the Jags aren’t likely going to let Allen slip next spring in free agency, similarly to how they didn’t to Cam Robinson and Evan Engram when they were both signed to franchise tagged. Allen is on the brink of his prime and has missed just one game since 2020.

Four of the top NFL’s top EDGE rushers–Joey Bosa, Watt, Bradley Chubb and Rashan Gary–all netted at least $95 million with their extensions, with the former three getting $110 million or more over four-to-five years, per Spotrac. There’s a world where Allen commands a similar amount throughout these negotiations as one of the league’s fastest-rising pass-rushers, even though the Jaguars could prioritize upcoming extensions for Trevor Lawrence and potentially Calvin Ridley over Allen.
