Report: Spencer Dinwiddie to sign with Lakers after clearing waivers

Roughly 48 hours after getting waived by the Toronto Raptors, guard Spencer Dinwiddie is expected to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers for the remainder of the 2023-24 season after he clears waivers, NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Saturday.

Dinwiddie was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. He was subsequently waived by Toronto shortly thereafter, allowing him to sign with any of the other 28 teams (outside of Brooklyn or Toronto).

Dinwiddie was spotted sitting next to Lakers general manager Friday evening during the Lakers-Pelicans game. Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell, who was teammates with Dinwiddie in Brooklyn, hinted that Dinwiddie could be heading to Los Angeles after Friday’s 139-122 win.

According to Charania and Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha, Dinwiddie is signing for the rest of Los Angeles’ prorated mid-level exception, which will be worth approximately $1.5 million.

Dinwiddie, who will turn 31-years-old in April, gives the Lakers an extra ball-handler and shotmaker to its backcourt. Gabe Vincent, who signed for most of the mid-level exception this offseason, has missed all but five games this season with a nagging knee injury. This signing will make Vincent’s role a little less defined when he returns and potentially minimize Max Christie‘s (when he’s healthy) and Austin Reaves‘ roles.

Dinwiddie has appeared in 48 games this season, averaging 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. He’s been one of the NBA’s least-efficient players in 2023-24, canning only 39.1 percent of his field goal attempts with a porous 48.0 effective field goal percentage.

He can still provide some value offensively as a playmaker, but I’m interested in how these roles are delegated behind superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis for the remainder of the season.
