Roughly five hours ahead of the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline, the Indiana Pacers are trading guard Buddy Hield to the Philadelphia 76ers for Furkan Korkmaz, Marcus Morris and three second-round picks, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was among the first to report Thursday.
However, the Pacers quickly flipped Morris and a second-round pick to the Spurs for Doug McDermott, Shams Charania of The Athletic was the first to report.
As of Thursday evening, it was officially announced that it was a three-team deal between San Antonio, Indiana and Philadelphia.
The Pacers have been trying to trade Hield, who’s on an expiring contract, since before the 2023-24 season began, but no deal was worked out a deal at the time. Second-round picks have been common currency the last two trade deadlines, so it’s smart that Indiana was at least able to obtain three instead of losing Hield for nothing in the summer.
Hield, 31, is one of the best shooters in the sport. As it stands today, Hield has made 119 more 3-pointers (1,240) than any other player, with the next-most (Stephen Curry — 1,121) since the start of the 2019-20 season, though in 123 more games. Over that span, Hield has converted on 39.3 percent of his long-range attempts; of the 57 players who have attempted at least 1,500 3s since, his efficiency would rank No. 10, sandwiched in-between Paul George and Gary Trent Jr.
Hield’s role in Indiana has been minimized this year, however. He’s averaging 12.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 44.3 percent shooting and 38.4 percent from 3-point range. There’s no question he can still be a quality floor spacer alongside Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris. His gravity will be essential to the 76ers’ offense, especially if Joel Embiid suits up again this season.
By acquiring Hield, Philadelphia owns his bird rights–allowing them to re-sign him in the offseason for any amount up to the max. Embiid ($51.4M) is the only player with a guaranteed contract on the books in 2024-25, per Spotrac; Paul Reed‘s final two years of his three-year deal will be guaranteed if they advance past the first round in the playoffs.
