Cast your mind back to 2017. You turn on ESPN on Sunday evening after the slate of games to see the leading highlight of the Saints game is QB Jameis Winston on the sideline making a W with his hand and making the motion to eat it. This moment has lived on in hilarious infamy for years now, and we finally got an explanation behind it.
In an appearance on Pardon My Take, Winston told the crew that the first four letters of his last name spell out “WINS”, and that stemmed the idea of eating the W. He also went on to talk about alphabet soup and seeing all the W’s floating around and only wanting to eat them. I can only imagine what it was like sitting in the huddle and watching Winston attempt to hype the team by doing this.
The idea behind the alphabet soup is that you’re scraping the bottom of the bowl to get all the W’s you can get. I just picture Winston coming home from a successful crab leg run from Publix, and as they boil he is scooping up all the W’s he can from his bowl. You think he saved all the W’s for last, or that was the first thing he went after so he made sure to get them?
Did Jameis Winston go on to lead the Saints to a win that day? They did not. But man did a viral sensation come out of that, and will be something that will live on in the minds of NFL fans for years to come. I’m sure there are kids out there today eating W’s in honor of Winston, and kids forever may be doing so as well.
