Jim Harbaugh Set To Join The Chargers

Former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is set to join the Los Angeles Chargers, according to Adam Schefter.

The 2023 National Champion head coach will leave Michigan and return to the NFL after 9 seasons with the Wolverines.

According to Schefter, Harbaugh will join the Chargers on a five-year deal.

Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward,” Owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos said in a statement.

Harbaugh will replace former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley and will have young star quarterback Justin Herbert to build off of.

Jim Harbaugh will face off against his older brother John in his return season to the NFL as the Chargers and Baltimore Ravens are scheduled to play each other at SoFi Stadium next season.

Harbaugh will return to the Chargers, where he spent the final two seasons of his playing career as a quarterback in 1999-2000 when the team was still in San Diego.

In his first NFL coaching stint with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014, Harbaugh had a regular season record of 44-19-1, which included 3 straight trips to the NFC Championship game and a feature in the 2013 Super Bowl against his brother and lost. Harbaugh has a postseason record of 5-3.

Jim Harbaugh ends his tenure with Michigan with 3 Big Ten championships and winning the NCAA National Championship last season.

Before accepting the Chargers job, Harbaugh also interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and was also scheduled to have a second interview with them before the meeting was canceled.

The Chargers had interviewed interim head coach Giff Smith, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, Detriot Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and other candidates, before deciding to go for Harbaugh as their head coaching option.
