Are the two best teams in college basketball in the Mountain West?

College Basketball is off to a great start for the 2023-2024 season with a lot of parity this season. There are the Blue Bloods of course with Kansas, Duke and Kentucky ranked in the top 10. However, there are some other teams making waves in the rankings possibly putting their hat in the ring to become national champions.

These teams are not considered the best teams in college basketball and rightfully so but they do have the best records as of Jan. 10: Nevada and Utah State of the Mountain West have the two best records in college basketball, as they both stand at 15-1.

The Mountain West is one of the best mid-major conferences in the country. It is funny that they have two teams that are leading college basketball record-wise. However, it is still early in the season and a lot of things can change as league play gets further underway. It is hyperbolic to call these two teams the top dogs of college basketball. However, it can be a stat that shows how good the Mountain West is in college basketball this year.

The Mountain West is usually a competitive conference that will have multiple teams in the March Madness tournament. Last year, San Diego State made it to the National Championship, where they lost to UConn. The conference is picking up where it left off so far this season and it will be interesting to see how many teams they have make the tournament this year. Also, people will have to wait to see if Nevada and Utah State are real contenders or just early-season pretenders.

The Mountain West so far this season

Nevada and Utah State are not the only teams making waves in the Mountain West. San Diego State is off to a 14-2 start, which is no surprise as the Aztec program has been extremely successful over the past several years; the most surprising team this year is Colorado State, who are 13-3 and at one point they were ranked as the No. 13 team in the country. One last team to mention is New Mexico because they are 13-3 and also pushing for the Mountain West title.

The Mountain West had four teams in the tournament in 2023. Now the conference has a chance to repeat and even get a fifth team into the big dance. As I stated earlier, it is early in the season so things can change. There are injuries, upsets, rivalry games and adversity that these teams will have to deal with this season. It will be interesting to check back in on the Mountain West in March and see where the conference stands.
