The Boston Red Sox are lying to their fans

The offseason for the Boston Red Sox organization has been uneventful. So far, they’ve traded away their longest-tenured arm in Chris Sale for infielder Vaughn Grissom, signed Lucas Giolito to a short-term rehabilitation deal, acquired outfielder Tyler O’Neill from the Cardinals and traded outfielder Alex Verdugo to the rival New York Yankees.

In November, Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner VOWED the team would go “full throttle” during this offseason. I don’t know his definition of full throttle, but this was not what any Red Sox fan had in mind.

After back-to-back last-place finishes in a tough AL East, the expectation was big moves for big players. Fast forward to now, fans are fed up and I do not blame them, especially with what has been said by the Red Sox front office who are now singing to a different tune.

In an interview this week with MassLive, Werner spoke about his comments.

“Maybe that wasn’t the most artful way of saying what I wanted to say,” he said, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive. “Which is that we’re going to be pressing all levers to improve the team. In the end, nobody’s happy with our performance the last few years. Some years, we go after somebody who is about to be a free agent, or was a free agent, as it pertains to Trevor Story or Raffy Devers.”

Please don’t be fooled by the Devers comment because this front office would have let Rafael Devers go Mookie Betts style if the Red Sox fanbase didn’t rip into John Henry into giving Devers that extension.

“We certainly aren’t happy with the current roster as it was at the end of last year,” Werner added. “So if I was going to say it again, I would say that we’re going to be pressing all levers and weren’t going to be happy with just one (method) — that includes free agency, trades or talent from Triple and Double A. I think that’s really what I meant.

“[Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow] came in knowing full well that we have a strong farm system and a need for a stronger competitive team, especially one focused on (improved) starting pitching, I don’t think we put additional pressure on him. If I set the bar high a little bit, as I said, it probably wasn’t the most artful comment.

“But on the other hand, what’s important is our record at the end of the season. Whoever spends the most amount of money in free agency doesn’t necessarily hoist the World Series trophy at the end of the year.”

Reading through, it seems Breslow has room to spend. However, being unsuccessful with signing player after player has fans angry. Breslow knows the situation he’s in, and ownership is not holding themselves accountable. Continuing to try to build a competitive team while staying under the luxury tax because that has been such an outstanding business model with one playoff berth since winning the World Series in 2018.

This mindset could very well continue to keep the Red Sox out of serious consideration among targets like Jorge Soler, Jordan Montgomery, and any future players the Red Sox may look to get. Right now the Red Sox are coming across as an unserious organization until they do something to change that.

As it stands the Red Sox are looking at “internal growth” of their farm system. Prospects like Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kyle Teel to be the future stars of the organization. Why? So ownership can send them out when they want to keep payroll down. Pathetic. This organization is losing its credibility every day.

Lacking accountability, especially canceling your town hall meeting at Red Sox Winter Weekend. Ownership is just supplying lip service to a fanbase that is not buying into their crap. There may come a time when the Red Sox have to look in the mirror and see this method fail again. They will very well make Craig Breslow another scapegoat like Chaim Bloom. Enough talking and start doing, make this a team people can be invested in once again.

While there’s still time, I can’t say with confidence this team will change greatly come March. Long story short: The people in power of the Boston Red Sox can be trusted at this point. The gaslighting of the fans and the blatant lies to the media as the Red Sox are being viewed as a bunch of fools. Full Throttle? Yeah … right into the toilet.

Truly heartbreaking for lifelong fans to see a once prominent team be in such a self-induced spiral.
