For the first time in UFC history, a fighter will attempt to defend the BMF Title. At UFC 300, Justin Gaethje will put the BMF Belt on the line against Max Holloway, UFC CEO Dana White announced on Twitter/X Tuesday.
At UFC 291, Gaethje knocked out Dustin Poirier with a head kick to become the second fighter to hold the BMF Title. One of the biggest questions surrounding the UFC in 2024 was whether Gaethje would defend the belt or not. Well, shortly into the new year we have our answer.
Holloway was an obvious choice to challenge for the BMF Belt. In his career, he has continuously engaged in absolute wars while providing fans with endless entertainment. The UFC roster does not have many fighters that embody the meaning of a BMF like Holloway.
This bout will be contested at lightweight. For Gaethje, that is standard, but Holloway is coming up from featherweight. The former featherweight champion last tested the lightweight waters in 2019 against Poirier. That experiment resulted in an all-time great fight, but Holloway did not get the nod from the judges.
This move does raise serious questions regarding the future of Holloway’s career. Is this a signal of a permanent move to lightweight or is this a one-off in an attempt to add hardware to his collection? That question will greatly impact both divisions while also playing a role in the amount of size Holloway can prior to the fight.
One thing is for certain, UFC 300 just gained a massive fight. Regardless of the BMF Title, the Gaethje and Holloway are two of the most entertaining fighters on the roster. It certainly makes sense to pair the two against one another.
UFC 300 is quickly gaining steam as the card continuously gains outstanding fights. Currently, the event has eight confirmed bouts. At this point, six of those eight fights include current or former UFC champions.
