Alabama Zeroing In On Kalen DeBoer To Replace Nick Saban

Nick Saban retired and that obviously sent shock ways through the entire SEC. You’re never going to replace Nick Saban. However, if you’re going to be tasked to do it, the Crimson Tide found a damn good candidate to be his successor. Alabama has zeroed in on Kalen DeBoer to become the next head coach in Tuscaloosa.

Pete Thamel of ESPN was the first to report the news. The compensation is expected to be revealed soon.

DeBoer, 49, spent the last two years at Washington. He’s 25-3 during that stretch that included a trip to the National Championship Game this year. Keep in mind this same Washington Huskies program went 0-12 during the 2008 season. DeBoer sports a 104-12 record as a head coach. Alabama found a damn good coach. I tried to tell you that a long time ago. DeBoer has been a rising star in this industry for a while and Bama found about as good of a replacement as possible.

You’re never going to replace Saban. The guy had a 206-29 record at Alabama. He had more first round picks drafted than loses. That’s a crazy stat. If you’re a Bama fan, you knew this day was coming. What’s important is that the program won’t go down in flames. DeBoer is highly respected and will do a great job. What’s important now is maintaining the recruiting foothold they have in the south.

In the end, Garrett put together a list of candidates that might get this job. DeBoer’s name was mentioned. However, I’m a bit surprised that Lane Kiffin didn’t get a harder look here. Given that Kiffin turned the Auburn job down and previously worked for Saban, I’m surprised there wasn’t more smoke around that. Still, Bama did well with this hire.
