Are the Philadelphia Eagles showing their true colors?

Sean Desai was hired this offseason, and while the Philadelphia Eagles are 10-4, they are still struggling defensively. They rank No. 26 (of 32) in the NFL in points allowed and No. 21 in yards allowed per play. The players also feel that Desai lacks confidence.

“Sean’s smart and the guys like him, but he doesn’t carry himself with confidence,” a team source told Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, according to NBC Sports. “And some players started to feel that.”

The problem is that Desai has not gotten his players to commit to his system, according to McLane. This is not the real problem; Matt Patricia took over the defensive play-calling Monday night against Seattle. The Eagles were hoping this change would be the key to fixing the problem. But the Eagles still to the Seahawks–with backup QB Drew Lock behind center for Seattle–20-17 Monday, and it was not a Sean Desai or Matt Patricia coaching problem.

The Eagles’ defensive style is a strong front four, focusing on pressure. The problem is this leaves weakness at the cornerback position and linebacker position. Veteran cornerback James Bradberry got cooked against the rookie wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba in crunch time.

Bradberry let up the game-winning touchdown with under 30 seconds left to the rookie receiver. It wasn’t just Smith-Njigba who cooked, but Lock led the game-winning drive, throwing for 208 yards and one touchdown with no interception. Jalen Hurts, however, threw for 143 yards, zero touchdowns with two interceptions.

The Eagles are going to need to figure their stuff out quickly if they want to be Super Bowl contenders because, right now, it looks like the San Francisco 49ers are running away with the NFC. This didn’t just prove a bigger problem with the team labeling them as fake; they also may not win their division with the Cowboys also standing at 10-4.

If the Eagles don’t secure a home advantage in the first round, they could be looking at a disappointing early exit.
