Mike Norvell Goes Off on the College Football Playoff Committee

The final 2023 College Football Playoff rankings were released earlier today. Undefeated Big Ten champion Michigan received the No. 1 overall seed. Undefeated Pac-12 champion Washington got the No. 2 seed and will match up with No. 3 Texas, the Big 12 champion. Finally, SEC champ Alabama jumped into the field as the No. 4 seed. Notably absent from the 2023 CFP field is the Florida State Seminoles. FSU went a perfect 13-0 and became the ACC Champion with a victory over Louisville last night. The Seminoles are the first undefeated Power 5 conference champion to miss the College Football Playoff.

The CFP Committee justified their decision, citing how Florida State has looked like a different team without their quarterback Jordan Travis, who suffered a lower leg injury in a late-November game against North Alabama. The Seminoles went on to win their final two games of the season without Travis.

Mike Norvell Releases a Statement

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell released a statement on his team’s exclusion from the CFP:

“I am disgusted and infuriated with the committee’s decision today to have what was earned on the field taken away because a small group of people decided they knew better than the results of the games. What is the point of playing games? Do you tell players it is okay to quit if someone goes down? Do you not play a senior on Senior Day for fear of injury? Where is the motivation to schedule challenging non-conference games? We are not only an undefeated P5 champion, but we also played two P5 non-conference games away from home and won both of them. I don’t understand how we are supposed to think this is an acceptable way to evaluate a team.”

It’s easy to see where Norvell is coming from. Florida State controlled their destiny the whole way. The Seminoles won every game in front of them, won their conference championship, and were still not selected.

Florida State will face the two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl on December 30.
