Taulia Tagovailoa Becomes Big Ten’s All-Time Passing Yard Leader

Maryland redshirt senior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa became the Big Ten conference’s all-time leader in passing yards during last night’s win over Rutgers. He surpassed former Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter’s career mark of 11,163 passing yards.

Coming into the Terrapins’ final regular season contest, Tagovailoa needed 269 yards to set the new record. He accomplished the feat just before halftime with a six-yard pass to Jeshaun Jones. Tagovailoa would finish the game with 361 yards and three touchdowns in a decisive 42-24 road victory over the Scarlet Knights. It seems the sportsbooks failed to factor in the potential for history. Tagovalioa’s passing yards line was set at just 255.5.

Taulia Tagovailoa has been Maryland’s starting quarterback for four seasons. He transferred to College Park after spending one year at Alabama, and now owns the Maryland Football all-time records in both passing yards and passing touchdowns. He currently paces the Big Ten in those two categories this season. The Big Ten passing yards record is just another feather in his cap as the redshirt senior has accumulated several accolades during his time at UMD.

With Tagovailoa under center, Maryland has reached two consecutive bowl games, winning both the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl over Virginia Tech and the 2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl over NC State. Having captured seven wins on the season, the Terps will appear in a third consecutive bowl game this year. The specific game has yet to be determined. If Tagovailoa throws for two touchdowns in that bowl game, he will set the Maryland record for single-season passing touchdowns. He currently shares the mark with Scott Milanovich after throwing for 26 TDs in 2021.
