Banner 18 is on the way. It’s championship or bust for the Celtics, but there is one underrated talking point nobody is talking about with this team. When the expansion draft eventually comes (because we know it’s on the way ), there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Boston couldn’t be better positioned when that expansion draft eventually hits.
The expansion is expected to take place as soon as next year. Maybe 2025 or 2026 is more realistic. Either way, teams need to be ready for this shoe to drop. Teams are allowed to protect up to eight players in the expansion draft. Good luck finding someone on the Celtics you want after eight are protected.
Let’s not even include Al Horford on here who could retire by the time of the draft. If the C’s win the title, I’d imagine he hangs it up. After that, the protected list includes: Tatum, Brown, Porzingis, Holiday, White, Pritchard…. does it really matter after that?
Who are you worried about losing here? Luke Kornet? Sam Hauser? I mean seriously.
It’s something to keep in mind. These next few years you’re almost better off competing. Rebuilding teams are going to get absolutely hosed in the expansion draft. Especially with the likelihood that two teams join based in Las Vegas and Seattle respectively. OKC is a lock to lose two really good players. The Celtics will laugh at the same time.
Enjoy this run C’s fans and know that the expansion draft won’t affect this team in the coming years at all.
