ESPN Should Be Embarrassed They Didn’t Rank Derrick White As A Top 100 Player

ESPN released their top 100 players in the NBA heading into the 2023-24 NBA Season. Karl did a really nice write-up about Kyrie Irving complaining about a list that he doesn’t care about. Only that would make sense to Kyrie. However, there is a much bigger story when it comes to this list that ESPN put out. Where the hell is Derrick White? That’s what I want to know.

I’m sorry, but White’s exclusion from the list makes it invalid. White, 29, is coming off a season where he averaged 12.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game across a tad more than 28 minutes per game. He also shot the ball at over 38% from deep last year.

With White, the box score doesn’t really do it justice. White was second team All-Defense a season ago which the box score doesn’t really factor in. He was also a 7.4 win share player a season ago and a +10.3 points per 100 possession player.

Again, the numbers are one thing. I could play the numbers game all day. I don’t need to. Watch the games. The Celtics would make that trade with the Spurs again without hesitation. He changed their team for the better. It’s not arguable.

The Celtics Need To Prioritize Getting The Derrick White Extension Done Now

This list is a joke. It’s one thing to leave White off the list. It’s another to put some of these names in front of him. I like Grant Williams… but c’mon. Do you think the Celtics would have given up on him if they thought Grant was the better player?

Mike Conley and Russell Westbrook are ranked 93rd and 94th respectively. There isn’t a general manager in the league that would take either ahead of White. WTF are we talking about?

ESPN is trash. White deserves way more respect than this and you’re an insane person if you think Westbrick is a better player. End of story.
