I hate writing stories like this but today is the day to remember one of the forgotten legends in Red Sox history. The greatest knuckleball pitcher in the history of MLB has tragically passed away today. Tim Wakefield has passed away after falling ill from brain cancer.
The Red Sox have put out a statement on the tragic news:
Wakefield, 57, was a great man on and off the field. That part can’t be understated. In 2010, Wakefield was honored with the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 2010. He also won the Roberto Clemente Award in 2010 too. He also had a project called “Wakefield Warrior Fund” and did plenty of work for charity.
Wakefield is still the franchise leader in innings pitched and won two titles with the club in 2004 and 2007. The Florida native sports a career 4.41 ERA but had plenty of spectacular seasons including an All-Star appearance in 2009. Wakefield also spent two years with the Pirates before spending the remaining 17 years with the Red Sox.
The infamous knuckleballer retired in 2012 but remained with the club upon his retirement. He even commentated games for Boston as a studio analyst for NESN.
RIP Tim Wakefield. Gone but never forgotten. A legend that may never be replicated again. Will we ever see a knuckleballer pitch as long as Wakefield did at the MLB level? I’m not sure we will ever see another guy like him again. Let’s remember Wakefield kindly today because this man deserves his flowers.
