After restructuring his contract for yet another time, Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes views his lucrative deal as a trend in the right direction for the QB market.
Mahomes, arguably one of the best QBs in the league, restructured his contract only a few after rival Joe Burrow signed the biggest deal in NFL history. Mahomes will receive $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026–the richest deal in NFL history in a four-year span.
“I don’t want people to be negotiated against me, and so that’s the reason that you do something like I did this last week,” Mahomes said Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher. “Just trying to keep the market moving in the right direction, (trending) in the right direction, so not only me but other quarterbacks in other positions can get paid the money that they deserve.”
Quarterback deals have only grown bigger and bigger since Mahomes signed his original extension with the Chiefs. Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert, Burrow and others have all gotten massive paydays thanks to one man–Patrick Mahomes.
“I thought we found a good one in this negotiation that we did (because) we will be able to still keep cap space for other guys to get signed,” he said.
Mahomes’ deal will only help the Chiefs sign key players now, and in the future. Conserving his cap to only four years guaranteed is genius. With this, Kansas City was able to bring back star defensive tackle Chris Jones, and will likely use the restructured contract to extend him past this year if they choose to do so.
“You have a lot of great players that I want to be here so we can win a lot of Super Bowls,” Mahomes said, per the Associated Press’ Dave Skretta. “I want to make a lot of money, but I also want to win.”
