The Philadelphia Eagles took down the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night in a hard-fought 34-28 win, but at a cost. Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox suffered a shoulder injury during the game, but now it became official Monday that Maddox will have surgery to repair a torn pec and will be out indefinitely, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
Maddox, a key member of a strong Eagles secondary, went down with an injury in the second quarter. While it’s still not official, the injury could potentially end his season, as Rapoport notes. He tallied two tackles in Thursday’s win and finished with 43 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, one sack, three pass deflections and one interception in 2022.
The Eagles have gained respect around the league for having one of the best defenses in the NFL. Their corners are one of the strong points of their defense, including Maddox, James Bradberry and Darius Slay.
Now, with Maddox out indefinitely, Philadelphia is down to Bradberry (who missed Thursday’s game due to a concussion) and Slay, in addition to Kelee Ringo, Josh Jobe and Eli Ricks, among others.
The Eagles lost one of the best defensive backs in the league last season in C.J. Gardner-Johnson to free agency–eventually signing a one-year, $8 million deal with the Detroit Lions after a deal wasn’t able to be made by both Philadelphia and Gardner-Johnson.
Maddox took time to his Instagram regarding his injury over the weekend.
“Seems as though I can never catch a break. But I know for sure I never quit! You can count me out all you want. But I know the process!“
After four seasons with Pitt, Philadelphia drafted Maddox with the 125th pick in the 2018 NFL draft. The 27-year-old corner posted 183 total tackles, 19 pass deflections, seven sacks and eight interceptions in his four years at Pitt.
