Star defensive tackle Chris Jones has agreed to a new one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, Katz Brothers Sports agency told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport Monday.
“Chris is an elite player in this league, and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team,” general manager Brett Veach said via release. “He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform. I’d like to thank Chris and his representation, Michael and Jason Katz, for their desire and patience to get this done. Through this process two things were obvious, Chris wanted to be a Chief, and the Katz brothers worked diligently on his behalf.”
The final number for Jones’ re-worked contract has yet to be released, as of this writing.
Jones was entering 2023 in the final year of a four-year, $80 million deal he signed ahead of the 2020 season. He possessed a $19.5 million base salary with an $8.8 million cap hit, per Spotrac, though he could end with an extra $1.25 million per year if he racked up 10 sacks in a single season.
By rule, Jones was fined $50K for each day he didn’t report for the Chiefs over training camp plus a $1.08 million game check–adding up to over $1.5 million. Now Kansas City, who suffered a 21-20 Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions Thursday, will get their prized defensive tackle back.
The 29-year-old is coming off arguably the best season of his career. He finished No. 3 in AP Defensive Player of the Year voting, totaling 15.5 sacks–tying a career-high–with 17 tackles-for-loss, 74 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four pass breakups. Jones was a first-team All-Pro for the first time of his career in 2022 and earned his fourth consecutive pro-bowl appearance.
