Trey Lance on being traded to Cowboys: ‘I had a big smile on my face’

After being traded to the Dallas Cowboys, it has been all sunshines and rainbows for Trey Lance. The former third overall pick has once again expressed his delight with his new squad, saying recently he “had a big smile on his face” when he was traded.

Ever since trade talks with the 49ers loomed with Lance, the Cowboys jumped at the chance and never looked back. Adding Lance to back up Dak Prescott seemed like a match made in heaven for Dallas. Now, with both sides in line with one goal, it seems like Lance and his new organization are happily married.

“We didn’t waste any time. The minute that we knew that they were serious about trading him, then we didn’t want the phone to hang up,” Cowboys owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones said. “We felt good about him, about the evaluation we had before the draft. We felt good about what we’ve seen on tape that he’s done since he’s been in the NFL, and it was one that we just made the decision almost the minute we heard the name. Let’s get him.”

After the former NDSU quarterback was acquired by the Cowboys, he couldn’t have been happier.

“When I heard Cowboys, I had a big smile on my face,” he said Tuesday, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“I’ve got to learn and earn every opportunity I get,” Lance said, according to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News.

“(Prescott) welcomed me with open arms,” Lance said of Prescott, per Machota. “That meant a lot to me. Just tons and tons of respect for him.”

“I learned a ton. … just very thankful for everyone there,” Lance said of his time with the Niners, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. “It’s not how I expected it to go. It’s not how I think a lot of people expected it to go. But I believe that everything happens for a reason. I think I’m here for a reason. Regardless of what it is, just want to try to find a way to help the team.”

Lance is set to be the third string behind Prescott and veteran quarterback Cooper Rush this upcoming season, but things could ultimately change in the quarterback room in the heart of Texas football.
