Mike McDaniel Is Ecstatic About The Addition Of Vic Fangio

The Miami Dolphins front office have made a lot of key accusations in the past two years. However, it seems that head coach Mike McDaniel is most excited about the addition of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to the squad.

The Dolphins agreed to a three-year deal with Fangio earlier in January that made him the highest paid coordinator in the NFL, per Tom Pelissero.

McDaniel was asked during his Monday press conference about the effect Fangio’s had on the team so far.

“I’m fired up for him,” McDaniel said. “I think that Vic has been absolutely phenomenal for the players, coaches, and organization. It kind of fits exactly with what I saw from the beginning. I saw a lot of synergy [with] him and I, ironically. I think a lot of people are like, ‘Huh,’ when I say that, but the way we approach football, the way that our fundamental philosophies of how to teach accountability towards the player and then in the requisite, accountability necessary from players to do what we’re asking them to do, the commitment to absolutely the best fundamentals and technique that you yourself can really come up with over a lifetime of football. He’s delivered on that tenfold.

There’s one sole commitment and that’s to winning football games and really empowering players with the best tools that they can have. So I think that embodies that and pretty much if it isn’t already obvious, Vic Fangio and myself, we’re the same guy.

The help was needed for a shaky Dolphins defense. Last year, the team ranked No. 4 in scoring defense (24.1 PPG), third-down conversion rate (41.6 percent), No. 23 in red-zone scoring rate (59.3 percent) and No. 13 in yards per play (5.3).

Money Moves

The team has taken full advantage of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa still being on his rookie deal. Back in March, Miami traded for three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to play alongside Xavien Howard, a four-time Pro Bowler. Unfortunately, Ramsey went down with a knee injury in camp and is recovering from surgery at the moment. He’s expected to return in November or December but hopes to beat that timeline.

They added and extended three superstar players, all in 2022. Tyreek Hill signed a four-year, $120 million extension that made him the highest-paid receiver in the NFL, per Over The Cap. He had a career-high 1,710 yards and added seven touchdowns. All-Pro tackle Terron Armstead signed a five-year, $75 million contract. Additionally, linebacker Bradley Chubb signed a five-year extension worth $110 million.

Fangio has a career 19-30 record as a head coach, but it is one of the best defensive minds in the game. Through 22 seasons in the NFL, Fangio’s defenses have ranked in the top 10 in points allowed 10 times. His 2018 Bears team ranked atop the league, while the 2011 and 2012 49ers, 1996 Panthers and 2021 Broncos each ranked second.
