Should the Mets be excited about Luisangel Acuña? Well, get ready for some more hype because older brother Ronald has some words. (Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports)

Luisangel Acuña Receives Serious Praise From Older Brother Ronald

The Mets are in sell mode but it’s not all bad news in New York. The prospect that the Mets received in the Max Scherzer trade has serious potential. Luisangel Acuña, the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald, is a hell of a return for Scherzer.

The new Mets farm hand now ranks second in the system and is regarded as a top-100 prospect. Acuña is slashing .315/.377/.453 in 84 games at Double-A Frisco this season. He also has 42 steals on 47 attempts.

Is this someone that Met fans should be excited about? It sure seems like it. If you needed more words of encouragement, older brother Ronald had some serious praise for Luisangel.

“My brother is more advanced and better than I was at his age. Maybe I was as talented, but not as advanced,” he said through an interpreter via the Dallas Morning News.

Acuña, 21, will probably reach the MLB level sometime in 2024 or 2025. So far the trajectory is really promising. I’ve given Billy Eppler a lot of hate (and rightfully so) but he did well here. It’s hard to hate the deal from the Mets’ perspective other than being disappointed that the team is underachieving. If Acuña turns into a star, maybe it will be a blessing in disguise.

If we’re going to play devil’s advocate, Acuña was an MLB All-Star by the age of 21. The younger brother is still in AA. It’s important to note that Acuña won’t be in the Mets big league tomorrow. There is still more development that needs to be done here. Acuña has struck out 76 times with 37 walks over 402 plate appearances. Not a bad number and it’s a really good sign that he’s making good contact in the minors.
