The Celtics Need To Prioritize Getting The Derrick White Extension Done Now

The Celtics already got Kristaps Porziņģis to take a smart team-friendly contract. Now it’s time to do the same with Derrick White before it’s too late. White is extension eligible and Boston shouldn’t wait another second to get this contract taken care of. Yes, White has two years remaining on his deal but that part shouldn’t matter.

Based on the new CBA, the Celtics have the opportunity to tack on three more years onto White’s deal that he signed with San Antonio. Right now White is in the third year of a four year deal worth $70 million. White currently accounts for 13.5 percent of the salary cap. The Celtics starting point guard can sign an extension worth 140% of what he’s currently under contract for which means he could sign a new deal that puts him at roughly $27 million per year.

The Celtics shouldn’t think twice and should just sign that deal yesterday. White has proven to be a fantastic player and fits in really well with this group. Boston is a better team with White on the floor and that’s just a fact. White was a +488 for the Celtics this past year. It’s the biggest reason why they underachieved. Broken down Brogdon was on the floor when White should have been. Yes, that +488 is a real number.

He’s also become a nightmare on the defensive end of the floor.

Pay the man before it’s too late. Given how much money is going to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown with these new supermax contracts, you need White at a cost controlled number. This is the way to do it. The longer you wait, the more the price goes up. Especially now that White will play more minutes with Marcus Smart gone.
