Blake Snell Wants To Stay With The Padres

Here at the site, Dom has been reviewing possible trade candidates leading up to the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline. For the post on Snell, click here.

With the Padres sitting 46-51 in 4th place in the NL, selling off the impending free agents on the roster would make a lot of sense. That list includes Josh Hader, who I recently talked about, and Blake Snell. Conventional wisdom would tell you that the Padres should sell in order to recoup some assets they gave away in recent deals (most notably for Juan Soto).

If you ask Snell about his future, he would tell you that he prefers to stay in San Diego. With any of these links from The Athletic, don’t bother clicking. It’s behind a paywall listed below.

“I would love to stay here,” Snell said Thursday, according to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin. “I love it here. We’ll see. That part’s out of my control.”

He added: “I’d rather finish this year here and see what happens.”

Snell may love it in San Diego, but he’s probably better off being traded. If Snell were to pitch well during a postseason run, that would only increase his value. If the rules of the qualifying offer do not change, a trade would also rescind the possibility that he could be hit with it this offseason too.

Who knows if Snell actually believes this but the left starter thinks the Padres are actually going to buy. Given how insane AJ Preller is, I guess that can’t be ruled out.

“I think we’re buying. That’s what I feel like,” the 30-year-old said. “I just feel like we gotta keep winning.”
