Mets fans apparently want Nolan Arenado

I guess you can never really make Mets fans happy. I can’t say I blame them, I’d be pretty miserable too if I were a Mets fan my entire life. Their downfall this season has been hilarious to see, as a Phillies fan, and I can only hope it continues. But apparently, New York Sports media has a grand idea to turn the Mets into contenders: Open Steve Cohen’s endless purse of money and bring in Nolan Arenado.

I know it sounds crazy, but it was credible enough for the New York Post to write about it. The article itself is behind a paywall, but you still get the point. Honestly, I wouldn’t blame you for laughing a little bit. I sure as hell did.

I guess Mets fans just think if you keep throwing money into the team, they will magically start playing better. But if that were stupidly the case, the Mets would find themselves in a much better position right now.

They have by a decent margin the largest payroll in the MLB, sitting at a projected $363 million, according to FanGraphs. Yet, they sit in 4th in the NL East with a 42-48 record with no hope of winning the division.

It’s been a huge disappointment, to say the least, and I don’t think throwing money into Nolan Arenado is going to drastically fix it. Putting lipstick on a pig is what I believe the old saying is. Sure he he will put up great numbers, he’s Nolan Arenado, but I don’t think it magically would turn the Mets into contenders.

They have plenty of other problems starting with Buck Showalter keeping his job as manager. Pitching has been bad with both Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer having rough first halves. Francisco Lindor has had a slow start with guys like Jeff McNeil and Startling Marte also having bat starts.

I mean there are rumors that Arenado could be traded, as the Cardinals start to tear it all down. But I just don’t know how the Mets get that done realistically. Again, I also just don’t think it’s the right move for this Mets team. You have the “star power” but need to round out the depth.

It’s just really been bad all around for the Mets, and I personally have enjoyed every second. I don’t think adding Arenado instantly fixes this team. But hey, maybe it will give their fans another false sense of hope.

What I do know is if the Mets do trade for Nolan Arenado, then Steve Cohen is really just playing with monopoly money. It’s not like it’s really mattered up to this point though. LOL Mets.

Or maybe it will just be an ego move to make up for the whole Carlos Correa situation–also a hilarious moment in the recent history of the Mets trolling their fans. God I love this team.
