Can Justin Herbert Win MVP With Kellen Moore as OC?

Justin Herbert is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL. Unquestionably top-five, maybe even top-three depending on who you ask. The Oregon product possesses the arm talent necessary to be in the mix for an MVP award every season he plays. That’s obviously no simple feat, especially with Patrick Mahomes as a contemporary, but a recent personnel change in Los Angeles may give Herbert a better chance to pull it off.

Kellen Moore somehow became the scapegoat in Dallas when it should be patently obvious that Mike McCarthy is the real problem. Perhaps you could fault Moore when it comes to creativity, but Dallas’ offense was consistently one of the most productive in the NFL during his time there. I’m not really sure what more they could have asked of him. When a team ranks top three in total offense, yards per game, and points per game over a three year period, you’d think the offensive coordinator would have a ton of job security. Evidently not, and the Chargers snapped up Kellen Moore. Now Justin Herbert gets to benefit from that productivity.

Early Returns

The results from the first three weeks of the 2023 NFL season have been increasingly promising. Following a close Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins in which Herbert put up pedestrian numbers, he started to hit his stride. He threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns in an OT loss to the Tennessee Titans. The former Duck then completed 85.1% of his passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns in a victory over Minnesota.

There’s certainly potential for a Herbert MVP campaign. The real problem may end up being that the Los Angeles Chargers aren’t winning enough. Currently 1-2 through Week 3, they will have to really start stacking victories for a Herbert narrative to get off the ground. The case may not look good for 2023, but there’s always next year.

Bottom line: Herbert has elite arm talent and now he has an offensive coordinator who can help him run up the numbers. Competition is stiff, but Justin Herbert is definitely capable of winning an MVP with Kellen Moore.
