Fred VanVleet signs three-year $130 million deal with Houston Rockets

After a career in Toronto, point guard Fred VanVleet is heading down south. VanVleet is joining a young Houston Rockets squad on a three-year deal worth $130 million. Adrian Wojnarowski reports of the signing.

Fred VanVleet has been the heart and soul of the Raptors organization for the past few years since he emerged into stardom. Over the past few seasons, VanVleet has been the guy for the Raptors at the point guard position. With a struggling Raptors team trying to find their identity and make it big, the decision with VanVleet is a major one.

The former Wichita State Shockers guard is now in his sixth NBA season, all being with the Raptors. Over the past four seasons, VanVleet has averaged over 17 points per game on decently efficient shooting. In the last three seasons, VanVleet has averaged over 20 points per game one time and just finished under that with 19.6 and 19.3 per game. Last season, VanVleet struggled with his shooting, but made up for it in his assist numbers. The 29-year-old guard averaged a career high 7.2 assists last season for Toronto. Now, with the big contract in his back pocket, the 29-year-old guard is looking to increase those numbers by even more with the Houston Rockets.

With the Raptors, VanVleet has helped lead them to the playoffs five out of seven times in his career. In the playoffs, VanVleet has been almost underwhelming in those five trips. In his time in the playoffs, VanVleet has never averaged more than 20 points in a playoff run. During the Raptors’ latest test in the postseason, VanVleet averaged 14 points, six assists, and three rebounds on very poor shooting. From the field, VanVleet shot 35.2% and 33.3% from deep.
