Fantasy Hockey: Sean Durzi To Arizona

Has a fantasy hockey star been born? Sean Durzi has been traded to the Arizona Coyotes but what does it mean from a fantasy hockey perspective? Let’s get right to it because this trade is fun when talking about this deal when it comes to fantasy hockey.

Durzi, 24, immediately slots in as the Yotes’ top powerplay guy. That’s the best place to be for fantasy purposes. Durzi posted nine goals and 29 assists in 72 games for the Kings in 2022-23. That was across slightly over 19 minutes of ice time for the Kings. I’d expect that number to go way up considering that Durzi is now the highest paid defenseman on the team. This is still a young player that’s improving too and has a contract to play for.

By the way, he’s also really good on the powerplay. I went over this in the trade grades post but Durzi posted really positive powerplay metrics on the Kings second unit. Durzi now gets more of an opportunity and gets to skate with at least Clayton Keller. At this point given where the Coyotes are at cap wise, I’d expect them to add more too.

I would not be surprised if Durzi winds up being a top-25 defenseman now. As I went over in the Sean Allen video, Durzi posted really good totals even a year ago when nobody expected it while playing second fiddle. I understand that the Coyotes suck but there is an opportunity here and the team they field next year will probably be better at this rate.

There is always a chance Durzi thrives and is later sold off to a contender too. It all depends on where Durzi is ranked but I would be quite high on acquiring him this year for fantasy hockey. Shayne Gostisbehere proved this a year ago posting 41 points. I think Durzi has a chance to even surpass that which would make him a damn good play for fantasy.
