Calvin Johnson wants to help Jameson Williams grow as a player
It looks like Detroit Lions’ second-year wide receiver Jameson Williams has struck gold. In an interview with 97.1 The Ticket, former Lions receiver Calvin Johnson explained that he hopes to help Williams make progress in his career.
“With everything, it’s a process and we’re making progress,” Johnson said Friday on 97.1 The Ticket. “So I just look forward to continued efforts to move in the right direction.”
It is hard to task to find a better mentor for a young Lions receiver than Johnson. In nine seasons with Detroit, he cemented a legacy as the best receiver in franchise history and one of the best receivers in NFL history.
Williams has struggled to consistently find his way onto the field thus far into his career. In college, Williams tore his ACL in the National Championship against Georgia. That injury greatly affected his ability to find the field as a rookie. Now, entering his second NFL season, Williams is facing a six-game suspension for violating the NFL gambling policy.
“I connected with Jamo yesterday really for the first time and I look forward to being around him and being a shoulder for him to lean on,” Johnson said. “Extremely talented kid. We saw him when he touched the field last year for the first time. I look forward to just helping him build the level of consistency and being the pro he wants to be, man. Anything I can to do help him, I’ll do that and I’ll be there.”
As much as Johnson’s presence is a massive benefit to a young player like Williams, this relationship shows growth in Johnson’s relationship with the Lions.
After his early retirement, the Lions requested that he paid back part of his signing bonus. That move destroyed the relationship between the two sides.
Since the Lions hired Dan Campbell, a former teammate of Johnson, as the team’s head coach, Johnson has slowly become more involved with the franchise. Now, he is attending practices and offering to help mentor one of the most talented young receivers in the NFL.
All Lions fans should be ecstatic about the thought of Calvin Johnson mentoring Jameson Williams. Not only will it help improve on-field performance, but Johnson’s involvement with the Lions is indicative of the improvements made from a management standpoint.
