The 2020 NFL Season will be a different one for Jonnu Smith. Delanie Walker is no longer the top name on the depth chart. Heading into year 4, the job is now Smith’s. He is the number one tight end on the Titans depth chart. The former Florida International tight end is eager to prove himself as the lead dog as his position.
“I am trying to be the best player I can be to help this team win as many games and win championships,” Smith said, via the team’s website. “For me, I’m tight end [No. 1] now, and I’m just going to take advantage of the opportunity I have in front of me and continue to be a workhorse and do what is expected of me.”
Smith, 24, admitted that he will miss Walker but he has to be excited to have the starting job. It’s not like he hasn’t done it in the past. Walker has missed 22 games over the last 2 seasons. BUT… now the job is officially his. Interestingly enough, Walker is still a free agent. The Titans could bring him back as a backup. At this point, Smith would start even if Walker returned to the team.
I won’t lie, I like Smith as a fantasy flier in 2020. Ryan Tannehill over a full season provides more of a stable presence. Smith posted 35 receptions for 439 yards and 3 touchdowns. I think we could see a steady increase. If that’s the case, Smith could realistically become a viable fantasy option. He’s on my radar as a sleeper candidate. He can make things happen in the open field and has plus receiver traits.
