On This Date – April 16th, 2019: Russell Wilson Becomes Highest Paid QB NFL History

The highest paid player in any sport doesn’t stay the highest paid for very long. Russell Wilson is a perfect example. On this date – April 16th, 2019: Russell Wilson officially became the highest paid quarterback and player in league history. Doesn’t that seem forever ago? Anyway, it happened just a year ago.

Wilson signed a 4-year extension worth $140 million. $65 million of it is guaranteed. Isn’t it funny that this seems like so long ago? Wilson still sits on top of the list in terms of highest annual value making $35 million per year. That will soon be topped. Sooner rather than later.

How has the contract extension worked out for Seattle? Pretty, pretty good. I’m not sure it’s one that can be argued. Wilson should have won the league MVP this year. 31 touchdowns, 5 INT’s, 66.1 percent and an 11-5 season with an average roster. I’d say things are going well with Russell Wilson.

“I told him what was most important was I just turned 30 years old,’’ Wilson said. “I think the next 10 years of my life, the next deal was going to be the place where ‘Hey, if we’re going to be in Seattle, wherever it’s going to be, I want to make sure that’s where I’m going to be for the next 10-12 years hopefully.’’’

“It’s just because really from the beginning of my professional career, it started here and my goal was to end it here,’’ Wilson said. “To leave a lasting impression on this city. … I want to be a Seahawk for life. That was kind of my mentality.’’
